Cher is an American singer whose career has crossed folk-rock, pop, rock, disco and dance music for more than six decades. Born in El Centro, California, in 1946, she first became widely known as one half of Sonny & Cher, whose 1965 hit “I Got You Babe” established the duo as a major pop act. Her solo career produced enduring singles including “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves,” “Half-Breed,” “If I Could Turn Back Time” and “Believe.” The latter’s pioneering use of Auto-Tune helped define a new strain of late-1990s dance-pop. Cher has also sustained a parallel film and television career, while continuing to record, tour and revisit her catalog. Her recent releases include the albums Christmas and Forever, along with the 2025 single “Christmas Is Here.”
