One of Hollywood’s greatest character actors visits Kimmel. The now 88-year-old actor, like Jimmy says, gives the audience what they want! But beyond the obligatory “Great Scott!” and a lifetime of beloved characters, Christopher Lloyd had a rather delicious confession involving Cher, her bedroom and one very unsuspecting girlfriend.

During the October 29, 2026, edition of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the Back to the Future legend stopped by to discuss his new memoir, In My Own Time. His career has supplied plenty of extraordinary encounters, but few sound quite as surreal as finding yourself in Cher’s bedroom and deciding that this might be the ideal moment to telephone your partner.

Christopher Lloyd, Cher’s Bedroom and One Awkward Phone Call

Lloyd recalled attending a movie-opening gathering at a restaurant on La Brea Avenue, where fellow actor Peter Weller—yes, RoboCop himself—was also among the guests. Cher was there, too, and after the gathering she invited Weller and Lloyd back to her home.

The residence, as Lloyd described it, was suitably grand and unusually quiet. On the way toward Cher’s lavish bedroom, he even remembered seeing a police officer stationed near a little office. Once inside, there were cocktails and conversation. The sort of evening that most people would spend decades casually dropping into dinner-party conversation.

Then came his sudden realization: he had a girlfriend back home. Wondering what she might be thinking, Lloyd picked up the phone. When she asked where he was, he gave the most remarkable—and technically truthful—answer imaginable: “I’m in Cher’s bedroom.”

Kimmel naturally wanted to know whether the explanation made his girlfriend happy or angry. Lloyd’s answer was a masterclass in understatement: “There was a pause.” A pause! Somewhere between a Hollywood fantasy and a domestic misunderstanding, that may be the funniest part of the entire encounter.

Princess Diana Had the Biggest Laugh at the Back to the Future Premiere

The Cher recollection was hardly his only royal-adjacent memory. Lloyd also revisited meeting Princess Diana at the London premiere of Back to the Future Part III. He said he had been working on a film in Poland when he was invited to attend. With Michael J. Fox unable to make it, Lloyd found himself receiving a little more attention than expected—and ultimately sitting next to Diana during the screening.

What impressed him most was not the formality of the occasion but the princess’s wonderfully ordinary sense of humor. As Lloyd remembered it, the film’s manure-covered Biff gag prompted the biggest laugh of the movie from Diana. The actor was delighted that royalty could find exactly the same outrageous joke funny as everyone else.

Great Scott! Christopher Lloyd Turns 88 and Still Feels 22

The interview arrived one week after Lloyd’s 88th birthday on October 22, an occasion too perfect for a Back to the Future reference. His celebratory post invoked the DeLorean’s famous 88-mph threshold, and Kimmel was more than happy to hear the actor give the audience its beloved “Great Scott!”

Asked whether he ever imagined fans would still quote the films four decades later, Lloyd answered with an emphatic no. And while the calendar says 88, he told Kimmel that inside he feels about 22. There is something rather lovely about hearing that from a performer whose characters remain so vividly alive in popular culture.

The Taxi Cast Had a Hilarious Way of Rehearsing

The conversation also returned to Taxi, the sitcom that gave audiences Lloyd’s gloriously unpredictable Reverend Jim Ignatowski. The cast, he explained, sometimes broke up the fatigue of midweek rehearsal by delivering their lines as quickly as possible in ridiculous rat voices, almost competing to see who could be the best rat of the day. Kimmel immediately wondered whether Danny DeVito was determined to win that title every time.

For an actor who also became Uncle Fester in The Addams Family and Professor Plum in Clue, a little theatrical absurdity is practically part of the job description. But Lloyd’s stories reveal something else: beneath those larger-than-life performances are decades of wonderfully human, occasionally chaotic memories.

Christopher Lloyd Revisits His Hollywood Memories on Jimmy Kimmel

The conversation moved easily between Lloyd’s famous screen roles and the less predictable encounters that come with a career spanning generations. From a British royal premiere to a visit to Cher’s house, these moments capture the humor and warmth of an actor whose memories have become as entertaining as his performances.

His memoir In My Own Time, released October 27, looks back on a lifetime of stage and screen work and the more personal experiences behind it. Lloyd credited his wife, Lisa, with persistently encouraging him to write the book, something he had not initially planned to do.

And between Cher’s bedroom, Princess Diana’s laughter and the Taxi cast impersonating rodents, it’s hard not to wonder how many more stories he still has tucked away.
