Tis the season for a little Samantha Stephens-style hocus pocus.

Tis the season! It’s Not You It’s Me Halloween would hardly be complete without a little hocus pocus from one of our all-time preferred witches: thee fairest and dazzling Samantha Stephens of Bewitched.
And yes, Samantha once packed up her nose twitch and took it all the way to Bedrock. Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York guest-starred as animated versions of Samantha and Darrin Stephens in a special crossover episode of The Flintstones simply titled “Samantha.”

The episode aired on October 22, 1965, during season six of The Flintstones. Samantha and Darrin move in next door to Fred and Wilma, instantly making one of television’s strangest neighborhood crossovers feel completely natural. Because apparently even witches need a prehistoric address now and then.
The plot quickly turns into a battle of the sexes when Fred and Barney head off for a camping trip and insist the women cannot rough it quite like they can. Samantha, naturally, has other plans. She joins Wilma and Betty in the woods and gives the ladies a little supernatural assistance, using her witchcraft to repeatedly outdo the men.

What makes the whole thing extra charming is that Montgomery and York actually voiced their own characters, giving the crossover a genuine Bewitched stamp instead of treating Samantha and Darrin like simple cartoon lookalikes. The result is one of those wonderfully specific pieces of 1960s television history that feels even more surreal now.
There is another perfect little connection between the shows, too: Hanna-Barbera animated the opening titles for Bewitched. So Samantha’s trip to Bedrock was not quite as random as it looks. The worlds had already been connected behind the scenes before ABC let the Stephens family officially move in next door.
Sixty-one years later, Samantha’s brief prehistoric detour still hits the Halloween sweet spot: a little witchcraft, a little camp, and one very elegant nose twitch proving that Bedrock was never going to know what hit it.
