Michael Douglas’ new memoir is currently making headlines everywhere, and frankly, the title One Helluva Ride is doing a lot less exaggerating than we first thought.

The two-time Oscar winner is opening the vault on decades of Hollywood stories, including affairs, addiction, famous friendships, family history and the kind of behind-the-scenes anecdotes that only somebody with Douglas’ résumé could possibly collect.

Affairs, Kathleen Turner and a Very Candid Michael Douglas

Among the biggest revelations are Douglas’ admissions about past affairs, including Kathleen Turner, his Romancing the Stone co-star. He also writes about a relationship with Jeanne Tripplehorn, making the memoir considerably more candid about his first marriage than longtime fans may have expected.

Douglas has said he wanted the book to be honest enough for his grandchildren to understand the whole picture — not just the movie-star version — which means the rougher chapters are very much part of the story.

Catherine Zeta-Jones Has Not Finished the Book Yet

Then there is wifey Catherine Zeta-Jones, Academy Award winner in her own right, who has not actually finished reading the memoir. Her explanation is considerably less dramatic than the headlines make it sound: she has been working and traveling heavily and says she has simply been too exhausted to get through the whole thing at night.

Douglas, for his part, has acknowledged that he warned her about some of the racier material. Considering how much of the book reaches back into the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s, that seems like a sensible household heads-up.

Drugs, O.J. Simpson and One Very Hollywood Memory Bank

Douglas is equally open about his history with cocaine and addiction. The Jimmy Kimmel Live conversation also gets into one of the more eyebrow-raising stories being pulled from the memoir cycle: Douglas recounting cocaine use with O.J. Simpson.

And that is hardly where the anecdotes stop. There is his father Kirk Douglas giving him a $10,000 check when he turned 21, his years living with Danny DeVito, stories about helping reunite Simon & Garfunkel, battles with cancer, movie-set memories and the general chaos of growing up as Hollywood royalty before becoming a legend in his own right.

In other words: One Helluva Ride may be one of the more accurately titled celebrity memoirs we have seen in a while.
