Remnants of Hurricane Polo helped feed the flood threat after the storm moved north from Mexico. In parts of the Southwest, evacuation orders were issued as water rose quickly and rescue crews responded to people caught in flooded roads and vehicles.

New Questions Surround Cornell’s Reopened Sexual-Assault Investigation

The broadcast also returned to the controversy surrounding Cornell University, where prosecutors have reopened a criminal investigation into allegations that a former student was drugged and sexually assaulted by multiple fraternity members in 2024.

The woman, identified in court filings as Jane Doe, has filed a civil lawsuit alleging that seven then-members of the Chi Phi fraternity sexually assaulted her after she was pressured to consume drugs and alcohol. No criminal charges were originally filed, but Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten has since said the case will be reexamined and presented to a grand jury.

Cornell has said it conducted its own investigation and imposed discipline, including expulsions and suspensions, while the Chi Phi chapter was barred from campus. The renewed criminal investigation has now placed both the alleged assault and the university’s handling of it back under national scrutiny.

Former American Idol Contestant Caleb Flynn Convicted of Murdering His Wife

In Ohio, a jury found former American Idol contestant and former music pastor Caleb Flynn guilty in the murder of his wife, Ashley Flynn. Jurors deliberated for a little more than two hours before convicting Flynn on all nine counts, including aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence.

Ashley Flynn, 37, was a schoolteacher and volleyball coach. Caleb had told investigators that an intruder entered their Tipp City home and shot her, but prosecutors argued that he killed Ashley and staged the scene to resemble a break-in. Evidence presented during the trial included extensive digital records and messages connected to an extramarital affair.

Flynn broke down after the verdict was read and was taken from the courtroom in handcuffs. Sentencing is scheduled for October 5, when he faces the possibility of life in prison without parole.

Lindsay Clancy Returns to Court After Her Murder Trial Ended in a Mistrial

Lindsay Clancy returned to court for the first time since her September 4 mistrial, opening another complicated chapter in the Massachusetts case involving the deaths of her three children.

At the hearing, defense attorney Kevin Reddington argued that prosecutors had failed to present enough evidence to prove Clancy killed the children, a notable shift after the first trial centered heavily on whether she was criminally responsible because of her mental state. Prosecutors disputed that claim and maintained that the evidence supported the charges.

The first trial ended with a deadlocked jury after weeks of testimony surrounding the January 2023 deaths of 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson and 8-month-old Callan. Clancy’s defense argued that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis; prosecutors argued that the killings were deliberate. The judge did not rule on the new defense motion during the September 29 hearing.

NBC’s Exclusive Report Goes Inside Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Prison Life

One of the broadcast’s most attention-grabbing reports came from Chloe Melas, with NBC News airing footage and reporting it said offered a rare look inside FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey, where Sean “Diddy” Combs is serving his federal prison sentence.

NBC reported that four men who spent time with Combs inside the prison described him paying other inmates to handle everyday tasks including cleaning, laundry and food preparation. The network also reported that footage reviewed by NBC appeared to show Combs using a cellphone, which is prohibited for federal inmates.

Combs’ spokesperson pushed back on the coverage, characterizing the attention to his prison routine as excessive. The Federal Bureau of Prisons told NBC it does not comment on the conditions of individual inmates for privacy, safety and security reasons.

The broadcast also noted another change to Combs’ projected release date. Federal inmate records viewed on September 29 listed a new projected release of January 21, 2028, another adjustment in a date that has shifted several times during his incarceration.

And Finally: Mason Wisnoski Gets His Touchdown Moment

NBC closed on a much warmer note with Mason Wisnoski, a high school senior with Down syndrome who usually supports his football team from the sidelines. This time, his teammates and coaches made sure he got onto the field.

Wisnoski suited up for the Manvel–Alvin rivalry game in Texas and was handed the ball for a play of his own. He took it 30 yards for a touchdown, with teammates running alongside him and the crowd celebrating the moment.
