A Dallas Gorilla’s Pregnancy Turned Into a Rare Cross-Species Medical Emergency
Today’s Tuesday Textures comes with a medical plot twist nobody had on their zoo bingo card. When a pregnant western lowland gorilla at the Dallas Zoo developed serious complications, the veterinary team called in a specialist who usually treats humans: board-certified OB-GYN Dr. Jamie Erwin.
The gorilla, Asha, 23, had been known to be pregnant, but her care team became concerned after noticing symptoms that are uncommon in primates. According to NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth, the resulting surgery revealed that both of Asha’s ovaries contained large cystic masses. Doctors also confirmed that she had suffered a miscarriage.

The operation was not simply a delivery. Because the pregnancy had ended in miscarriage, the surgical team performed what Dr. Erwin described as essentially a C-section to remove the unborn baby, while also addressing the ovarian masses discovered during surgery. The good news: Asha was found to be cancer-free.
And somehow, this was not even Dr. Erwin’s first gorilla C-section. In 2024, she helped deliver Jameela at the Fort Worth Zoo in what was a historic cesarean birth for that zoo. So when Dallas Zoo needed a human OB-GYN with unusually specific great-ape experience, they actually knew exactly who to call.
Cases like this are unusual, but the collaboration itself makes sense. Great apes and humans share enough anatomical similarities that specialists in human obstetrics can sometimes offer techniques and experience that complement a zoo’s veterinary team. The key word is complement: the human doctors are not replacing zoo medicine, they are joining it when the case demands extra expertise.
After surgery, Asha spent a couple of weeks recovering before rejoining her troop and returning to habitat. Her team reported that she was healthy, acting like herself again and showing her usual feisty personality.
The whole story lands somewhere between heartbreaking and extraordinary. The pregnancy did not have the outcome anyone wanted, but the surgery also uncovered a serious ovarian problem that could be treated, and Asha made it safely through a highly unusual procedure.
It is one of those stories that reminds you how specialized modern zoo medicine has become. Sometimes the right person for the job is a primate veterinarian. Sometimes it is a surgeon. And apparently, once in a while, it is an OB-GYN who has already done this before.
