One Hot Squirrel Turned a Texas Porch Into a Tiny Paradise
Everyone’s muse is a little different from time to time, and today’s Monday Motivation comes with a bushy tail. A Texas woman turned one overheated squirrel’s accidental discovery into a miniature backyard resort complete with fans, snacks, water and a full woodland hangout built to make brutal summer days a little easier.
The story, recently spotlighted by The Dodo, belongs to Breyana Elwell of New Braunfels, Texas. What eventually became a squirrel spa started almost by accident: Elwell’s husband had placed a small fan outside to help keep mosquitoes away, and one morning she noticed a squirrel stretched out directly in front of it, fully committed to thee breeze.

The timing mattered. Central Texas was baking through temperatures that pushed past 100 degrees, and the squirrel appeared to be getting real relief from the moving air. Elwell turned the fan back on the next morning. This time, two squirrels showed up. At that point, apparently, reservations were officially open.
From there, things escalated in the best possible way. Elwell began putting out fruit-filled ice cubes, nuts, seeds, dried cranberries, corn and water. More battery-powered fans followed. Then came logs between trees that worked like tiny squirrel highways, a courtyard area and eventually a cabana-style setup where the neighborhood regulars could cool down and snack.
Elwell told reporters that she had never even considered herself much of a squirrel person before all of this. But watching one little animal flatten itself in front of a fan during the heat changed something. The squirrels kept returning, her two sons became fascinated by them, and the increasingly elaborate routine became a hobby she found genuinely therapeutic.
At one point, she said she was spending roughly two hours every morning assembling the resort: loading batteries into the fans, putting out treats and water, and arranging the different pieces before taking everything down again at night so her dogs would not destroy it. She has seen as many as a dozen squirrels appear at once.
And that is where today’s motivation actually lands. Elwell did not wake up planning to become thee proprietor of a woodland wellness retreat. She saw something small that needed help, followed her curiosity, and accidentally found a hobby that brought her family joy too. Sometimes the thing that pulls you out of your routine is not some massive life plan. Sometimes it is literally a squirrel lying belly-down in front of a battery-powered fan.
