A Backyard Patio Project Just Unearthed a Viking “Safe”
A man in Rebild, Denmark, set out to do one of the most ordinary homeowner jobs imaginable: clear part of his garden for a new tiled terrace.
Instead, he hit thee archaeological jackpot.
The accidental discovery has turned out to be Denmark’s largest known Viking Age silver hoard — roughly 18.5 kilograms, or more than 40 pounds, of silver dating to the 10th century.
According to archaeologists with Nordjyske Museer, the find includes around 700 objects and fragments: silver bars, bracelets, chopped silver, jewelry, 47 whole coins and coin fragments and one especially tiny show-stealer — a Thor’s hammer.
The resident, who has chosen to remain anonymous, said the surprise began after about half an hour of digging when his garden fork struck something that made an unusual sound. What first seemed like old iron or fencing wire quickly turned into one metal object after another.
About 320 objects weighing 6.4 kilograms were still sitting inside the original clay vessel. The remaining pieces had become scattered through the surrounding soil, bringing the total weight of the hoard to nearly 18.5 kilograms.
That makes it almost three times heavier than the previous Danish record-holder, the approximately 6.5-kilogram Terslev Hoard.
But size is only part of why archaeologists are so excited. The hoard contains both Arabic and Anglo-Saxon coins, evidence of the far-reaching trade networks connecting Viking Age Denmark to England in the west and the Islamic world far to the east.
One silver bar even carries a runic inscription that may read “hutu”. Researchers are not yet certain what it means; it could be a personal name, an ownership mark or something else entirely.
And then there is that miniature Thor’s hammer. Small enough to disappear among the hundreds of pieces, it is one of the most instantly recognizable objects in the entire haul — a tiny symbol of Norse belief sitting inside what archaeologist Torben Sarauw described as something like a Viking “safe.”
The silver is now being examined by specialists, giving researchers a rare chance to study not only what Vikings owned, but how they stored, weighed and used silver as wealth and payment more than a thousand years ago.
