Before The Pop Takeover, Ariana Shared The Mic With Patti LaBelle

Ampliship is the word of the day. We’re throwing it back to the moment a newly 18-year-old Ariana Grande found herself sharing a microphone with the one and only Patti LaBelle.
Long before Ariana’s full pop-girlie takeover, her 2011 birthday celebration at Paramount Studios doubled as a concert filled with family, friends and performers. Then Ms. Patti arrived near the end and turned the party into a vocal masterclass.

Patti LaBelle Did Not Arrive With A Small Birthday Gift
LaBelle reportedly came out to sing “Happy Birthday” to Ariana before performing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”—already a major moment for the young singer—and then inviting her into “Lady Marmalade.”
It was the kind of birthday surprise that quietly becomes part of a future superstar’s origin story. Ariana was still best known to many viewers for Victorious, but standing beside LaBelle made the vocal ambition impossible to miss.

And Patti did not treat the duet like a ceremonial handoff. She sang it with full LaBelle force, giving Ariana room to answer, harmonize and lean into the song while the two traded that unmistakable chorus together.
Lady Marmalade Connected Two Very Different Pop Generations
Originally recorded by Labelle in the 1970s, “Lady Marmalade” had already lived several pop lives by the time Ariana turned 18. The original became a defining funk-rock and soul classic, while the 2001 Moulin Rouge! version introduced another generation to its theatrical possibilities.
Placing Ariana beside Patti connected those histories in real time: the woman whose voice made the song legendary and the teenager who would soon become one of pop’s most technically recognized vocalists.
The best part is how unmanufactured it feels. There is no polished award-show staging or carefully timed promotional campaign—just a birthday crowd, a shared microphone and a young singer trying to hold her own beside a living vocal institution.
