Here comes this weekโ€™s allegedly โ€œcontroversialโ€ take: Patti LaBelle sounded like Patti LaBelle while performing the national anthem before the 2026 MLB All-Star Gameโ€”and somehow that became a problem for people who apparently invited a living legend but expected a human tuning fork.

LaBelle took the field at Philadelphiaโ€™s Citizens Bank Park as the cityโ€™s own Godmother of Soul, accompanied by the Military District of Washington Joint Chorus and the West Point Band. She did not deliver a cautious, anonymous reading. She bent the anthem around her phrasing, stretched its emotional peaks and approached the song with the gospel-rooted instinct that has defined her voice for generations.

Now for all the numbnuts and murmurs. There is a warped expectation placed on living legendsโ€”especially Black womenโ€”that they must remain technically frozen at the exact age and condition in which the public first decided they were great. Decades of invention, touring, risk, survival and influence are treated as background noise the moment a performance does not match somebodyโ€™s preferred studio-perfect template.

Patti LaBelle has never been a singer who politely places every note where listeners expect it. She attacks, bends, cries, growls, lifts and occasionally sends a phrase somewhere only Patti would dare follow. That expressive unpredictability is part of the architecture. Asking her to remove it would be like inviting a painter and demanding a photocopy.

You can prefer a straighter anthem. You can even say a particular run or pause did not work for you. Music criticism does not end because the performer is iconic. But there is a difference between discussing a choice and speaking about an artist of LaBelleโ€™s stature as though she wandered onto the field without understanding the assignment.

Her career began in an American music industry that routinely restricted Black performers while borrowing their sound, presentation and innovation. LaBelle did not merely survive that machinery; she helped expand what a Black woman could sound like, look like and command onstage. The futuristic glamour of Labelle, the volcanic vocals, the theatricality and the refusal to become small all helped create a performance vocabulary that later generations inherited.

That history matters when online spectators flatten a living pioneer into a few isolated seconds and grade her as though she were auditioning for permission to exist. A performerโ€™s age, rรฉsumรฉ and accumulated blood, sweat and tears do not make every artistic choice untouchableโ€”but they should at least inspire enough perspective to recognize the person standing in front of us.

There is also an obvious double standard in how aging artists are received. Some are praised simply for appearing, their fragility treated as poetry. Othersโ€”often women, and very often Black womenโ€”are expected to arrive preserved, powerful, familiar and flawless all at once. LaBelle is allowed the same humanity, evolution and interpretive freedom routinely granted to every revered singer-songwriter who has lived long enough for the voice to carry history inside it.

So this one is for the music loversโ€”not the casual commenters who confuse personal preference with objective failure and never understand thee assignment. Patti did what Patti does and always will: she sang it in her own style, on her own terms, with the full weight of the road behind her.
