Andy Lewis Was Part of Madonna’s Super Bowl Spectacle

Professional slackliner, BASE jumper and stunt performer Andy Lewis, who many Madonna fans remember from her 2012 Super Bowl halftime show, has died following a tandem BASE jumping accident near Moab, Utah.
For us Madonna fans, Lewis remains tied to one of the greatest Madonna performances and Super Bowl spectacles ever: the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show, where the Queen of Pop turned the field into a Roman-Egyptian pop empire and Lewis bounced, flipped and flew through the “Music” section like the stage had been built just for him.
Lewis, also known as “Sketchy Andy,” was reported to be one of two people killed during a tandem BASE jump in the remote Mineral Bottom area of Grand County, Utah. Local authorities and multiple outlets identified the second victim as Danny Joe Kregle of Arizona.

The Grand County Sheriff’s Office said deputies, emergency medical personnel and helicopters responded to the remote area after the BASE jumping incident was reported. Both men died from their injuries at the scene.
We all have to leave this world one day, and while the loss is heartbreaking, there is at least some comfort in knowing Lewis left while doing the wild, impossible thing he loved.
Lewis was a major figure in slacklining, tricklining and BASE jumping, with a reputation that stretched from extreme-sports circles to one of the most-watched pop stages in America. His Madonna Super Bowl moment introduced his style to millions in a way that still feels almost unreal to watch back.

Back in 2012, ABC News profiled Lewis after the halftime show and described the new challenges that came with performing beside Madonna on the world’s biggest televised stage. Lewis had rehearsed for weeks, adjusted to the costume and stage, and helped turn “Music” into a piece of pop-athletic spectacle.
