“Barbie and Succession lead the nominations for the 2024 Golden Globes, which were revealed Monday morning.

Barbie and Succession each took nine noms in the film and TV categories, respectively.

On the film side, Oppenheimer came in next, with eight nods, followed by Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things with seven each. Netflix led all film distributors with 13 total noms, followed by Warner Bros. Pictures with 12.

In the TV categories, Succession was followed by The Bear and Only Murders in the Building, with five noms apiece, and The Crown, with four. HBO/Max led all TV distributors with 17 total nods, followed by Netflix with 15.

Meanwhile, a number of projects that were expected to land nominations were snubbed including Ferrari, Napoleon, Origin and Swarm while nods for Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift and Fallen Leaves‘ Alma Pöysti surprised.

Cedric the Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama announced the nominees across multiple film and TV categories, including new awards recognizing stand-up comedy and cinematic and box office achievement, live from the Beverly Hilton.

The award for best cinematic and box office achievement includes eight nominees chosen from films that achieved “a box office receipt total/gross of $150 million, of which $100 million must come from the U.S. domestic box office, and/or obtain commensurate digital streaming viewership recognized by trusted industry sources,” the Globes said in announcing the category this fall. Films released after Nov. 22 through the end of the year “may qualify based on projected box office performance and/or digital streaming views from trusted industry sources.” Golden Globes voters will then determine the nominees and winners in this category “based on excellence” from among the films that meet the box office and streaming viewership criteria.

The nominees in that category are Barbie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, John Wick: Chapter 4, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Oppenheimer, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.

The second new category is for best performance in stand-up comedy on television, which will feature six nominated comedians who gave “traditional stand-up comedy performances of at least 30 minutes, other than roles in television series, limited series, anthology series or motion pictures made for television” on “a recognized media platform (individual social media accounts do not qualify).” The inaugural nominees are Ricky Gervais, Trevor Noah, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman and Wanda Sykes.

The 2024 Golden Globes mark the first since the Golden Globes’ longtime backer, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, was replaced following the acquisition of all the HFPA’s assets, rights and properties by Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge. Dick Clark Productions now owns and produces the Golden Globe Awards. DCP is owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a joint venture between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge that also owns The Hollywood Reporter.

With the Globes no longer being overseen by the HFPA, a new, racially and ethnically diverse group of voters — made up of 300 journalists from around the world, representing 76 countries — is selecting this year’s nominees and winners.

The Globes last month inked a new broadcast deal with CBS after the awards group ended its longtime relationship with NBC, which aired the 2023 Golden Globes, earlier this year.

And just this past Friday, the site of both the Globes’ nominations and awards ceremony, the Beverly Hilton, reached a tentative agreement with hotel union Unite Here Local 11, the Southern California and Arizona labor organization that has been on strike since June 30, when its latest deal expired. The provisional agreement, still subject to a ratification vote by members, seemingly averts any picketing of the venue that could have occurred during Monday’s nominations announcement or the Golden Globe Awards itself.

The 81st annual Golden Globe Awards is set to air live from the Beverly Hilton on CBS and stream on Paramount+ on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024, at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET. Though a host has yet to be announced, Emmy-winning producers Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner are set to serve as showrunners, with Weiss set to direct.
