Ten Years Later, Glory Still Feels Like Britney Reclaiming the Room

Zephyring ten years, Britney Spears’ Glory has officially hit the decade mark.

Released on August 26, 2016, Britney’s ninth studio album arrived as what she herself called “the beginning of a new era.” A decade later, that line feels both celebratory and a little bittersweet.

Because for us, Glory is tied to one of those very specific Britney memories that now feels almost unreal: flying out to Las Vegas on a Friday just to catch Miss Spears during her Piece of Me residency.

Thank the universe we did.

Britney is not performing these days, which makes revisiting this era hit differently. In 2016, she was still onstage, still promoting, still doing press, still giving us choreography, attitude and those unmistakably Britney little vocal moments that made even the album cuts feel like events.

Glory Was Signature Britney Without Chasing Her Past

Glory was Britney doing what she has always done best: taking whatever pop was doing at the moment and bending it until it sounded like something only she could sell.

The album moves from the hazy come-on of “Make Me…” to the playful bounce of “Clumsy,” the dreamy “Man on the Moon,” the sleek “Slumber Party” and the gloriously direct “Do You Wanna Come Over?”

That last one remains one of our favorites from the era because it has everything we want from a Britney album track: a ridiculous hook, a little danger, a little camp and absolutely no reason to pretend subtlety is the goal.

Produced by Mattman & Robin and written with collaborators including Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter, “Do You Wanna Come Over?” was one of the tracks that made Glory feel playful rather than overworked.

The Album Also Captured Britney in a Rarely Loose Mood

There is something about the Glory era that feels looser in hindsight.

The record itself sounds less burdened by the need to manufacture another enormous Britney moment. Instead, it lets her flirt, whisper, bounce around different textures and sound like she is actually having some fun inside the material.

That may be why the album has aged so well.

It was never trying to recreate …Baby One More Time, Blackout or In the Zone. It was its own little late-night Britney universe.

Britney’s Glory Era in Images

The standard edition of Glory runs 12 tracks, with the deluxe edition expanding the album further. It also became Britney’s final studio album to date — something nobody listening in August 2016 could have known would still be true ten years later.

That is what makes this anniversary a little strange.

We are celebrating a record that still sounds alive while knowing the version of Britney who made it — recording, promoting, rehearsing, performing in Vegas and sitting down for interviews — belongs to a chapter that has since closed.

But the album is still here.

And ten years later, Glory still has plenty of glory left in it.
