Woman Crush Sunday: Kylie Minogue As The Green Fairy in Moulin Rouge! (2001)

A Sunday kind of love meets a cinematic fever dream — Kylie Minogue shimmering as the absinthe spirit.

Today’s Woman Crush Sunday is a forever-favorite here at INYIM: Kylie Minogue as the Green Fairy in Baz Luhrmann’s groundbreaking 2001 musical-romance-spectacle, Moulin Rouge!.

In one of the film’s most unforgettable sequences, Kylie appears as a hallucination of the absinthe spirit — a glittering, intoxicating vision who materializes in a swirl of emerald light, whimsy, and mischief. It’s a cameo that lasts only moments, yet it imprints itself on the entire film’s mythology.

As the young poet Christian (Ewan McGregor) and his bohemian companions drink absinthe, their Parisian night takes a spectacular detour. In comes Kylie: part mischievous sprite, part cabaret siren, and entirely at home in Luhrmann’s lavish fever dream. The little green apparition even multiplies across the screen as the scene slides further into delirium.

And that voice! Kylie sings a fragment of “The Sound of Music” before the sequence spins into a musical collision with T. Rex’s “Children of the Revolution.” Then comes the wicked final sting: Ozzy Osbourne supplies the Green Fairy’s terrifying scream. Luhrmann later explained that Ozzy’s involvement was originally planned to be far bigger, but the finished movie retained just that deliciously unexpected outburst.

The result is quintessential Moulin Rouge!: sweetness colliding with mischief, pop meeting rock, and one glorious little cameo behaving as though it owns the entire movie. Our “Lady Marmalade” behind-the-scenes feature is another trip into that same wonderfully excessive cinematic world.
