Long before “Mickey” turned her into a permanent piece of ’80s pop culture, Toni Basil was already recording, dancing, choreographing and making wildly forward-thinking visual work. One of the earliest pieces of that story is “Breakaway,” her fiery 1966 A&M recording that later became a Northern soul favorite and the soundtrack to Bruce Conner’s landmark experimental film of the same name.
Nearly six decades later, Basil got something back that artists from that era rarely expect to see again: ownership of the master recording. In 2024, after 58 years, she said she had acquired the “Breakaway” master and was finally able to put the track back out under her own control.

Basil shared the story through Words That Move, explaining that the ownership trail eventually led back to her — with an Australian fan helping surface the discovery. What makes the story so satisfying is how casually such a major piece of personal history seems to have resurfaced: a record cut when Basil was still at the beginning of her recording career suddenly belonged to her again.

The record dates to 1966, when Basil was recording for A&M. The original U.S. 7-inch paired “I’m 28” with “Breakaway”, with Ed Cobb producing and Lincoln Mayorga arranging. “Breakaway” clocks in at just over two minutes, but it already carries the kinetic charge, rhythmic snap and theatrical physicality that would become so unmistakably Toni.
And while the record never became a mainstream smash, dancers and collectors refused to let it disappear. “Breakaway” found another life in Northern soul culture, where obscure and overlooked American soul records could become treasured dance-floor currency years after their original release. That second life is part of why the song feels less like a curiosity and more like a secret that kept finding new listeners.
Bruce Conner Turned Toni Basil’s Movement Into Experimental Film History
Then there is the visual history. Artist and filmmaker Bruce Conner built his 1966 short film BREAKAWAY around Basil and the song, turning her movement into a rapid-fire five-minute piece of experimental cinema. MoMA identifies the film as a 1966 work directed by Conner with Basil on screen, and has repeatedly grouped it with early dance films that prefigured the MTV-era music-video aesthetic.
That makes “Breakaway” especially fascinating in hindsight. Basil’s career would eventually span choreography, directing, pop records, film and television, but the basic blueprint was already there: music and movement treated as one visual idea rather than separate jobs. So no, this was never simply some obscure pre-fame recording sitting in a vault.
The song’s 2024 return to streaming doesn’t manufacture a new history for it — it finally makes an old one easier to hear.

For Toni Basil, Owning the Work Has Become Part of the Story
There is another reason the return of “Breakaway” lands with a little extra weight. Basil has spent years fighting over control of her recordings and image, including the long-running rights history surrounding “Mickey” and the Word of Mouth material. A federal copyright dispute ultimately recognized Basil as the sole copyright owner of the original sound recordings from that era. Against that backdrop, getting a master from 1966 back into her own hands feels less like a footnote and more like another piece of a very long ownership story.
It also underlines something that gets lost whenever Basil is reduced to one cheerleader sweater and one gigantic hit. The dancer, choreographer, director, visual artist and recording artist was building her language years before “Mickey” arrived — and “Breakaway” is one of the clearest surviving pieces of that early puzzle.
And there is something wonderfully Toni about a record from 1966 refusing to stay buried. Nearly six decades later, it is back where it belongs: in her hands, on streaming, and ready for another generation to stumble into it and ask the same thing we did — how was this sitting here all along?
