The Category Is… Selena Choosing Herself and Leaving the Games Behind
The Category Is… Selena, “No Debes Jugar.”
“Some people do not want to repair the bridge. They want you to swim back across the water with everything you learned and pretend you are not tired. Do not return to a shore that watched you drown and then invalidated you after.”
R.M. Drake
And if that does not slide perfectly into “No Debes Jugar,” we do not know what does. Selena spends the song drawing thee line: enough games, enough being treated like something somebody can wind up whenever they feel like it, enough waiting for an answer that should have already been clear.
Released in 1993, “No Debes Jugar” is one of the studio tracks added to Selena’s Live! album alongside “Tú Robaste Mi Corazón” and “La Llamada.” The record may be called Live!, but this one was cut in the studio — and it arrived with Selena y Los Dinos already sharpening that unmistakable cumbia-pop rush into something that still snaps more than three decades later.

The album carrying “No Debes Jugar” would go on to win Selena the Grammy for Best Mexican-American Album at the 36th Grammy Awards in 1994 — a landmark moment in a career that was still accelerating. And tucked among all that history is this studio track, sounding breezy enough to dance to while Selena politely tells somebody they are very close to getting left behind.

The wording is simple, but that is exactly why it lands: if you love me, say it. If you do not, say that too. Selena is not staying stuck in somebody else’s indecision. She is already halfway out the door and taking thee cumbia with her.
That is why “No Debes Jugar” still slots so naturally into INYIM Radio now. It is a throwback with zero museum dust on it — bright, direct, rhythmic and emotionally done.
