“Son of a Critch” Heads Back to 1992 for One Final School Year

Class is almost dismissed for good. Beloved Canadian coming-of-age comedy Son of a Critch has unveiled the trailer for its fifth and final season, sending young Mark back to school one last time.

Son of a Critch has quietly become one of our favorite little-known series — the kind of Canadian gem that is as funny and sweet as another longtime INYIM favorite, Kim’s Convenience. If you somehow missed this one, there is still time to catch up before the goodbye.

Based on Mark Critch’s award-winning 2018 memoir, the semi-autobiographical series has spent four seasons turning his Newfoundland childhood into a funny, awkward and genuinely warm family comedy. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth plays young Mark, while Critch himself stars as his father, Mike Sr.

And now sweet Mark is ready to graduate. We are heading into 1992 — the year the real Critch finished high school — although teenage Mark is apparently already having what can only be described as a midlife crisis at 17.

Growing Up While Newfoundland’s World Changes Around Him

Mark’s graduation year arrives just as Newfoundland is being shaken by the 1992 Northern cod moratorium, which shut down the fishery after the collapse of cod stocks and put tens of thousands of people out of work. For the Critches and everyone around them, the future suddenly feels a lot less predictable.

Mark, meanwhile, is more determined than ever to chase his dream of becoming an actor. Friendships are shifting, first love is getting complicated and the adults are scrambling with changes of their own — exactly the kind of messy transition this show has always handled best.

The final season also brings back Mark Critch, Malcolm McDowell, Claire Rankin, Colton Gobbo, Mark Ezekiel Rivera and Sophia Powers, with returning and guest players including Richard Clarkin, Nicole Underhay, Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll, Nora McLellan, Shawn Doyle, Susan Kent and Rick Mercer.

Critch announced earlier this year that Season 5 would be the show’s last, explaining that Mark’s final year of high school also felt like the natural place to close the story. The new run consists of 12 half-hour episodes.

Son of a Critch returns for its final season on September 8, 2026 on CBC and CBC Gem in Canada.
