Two Artists, Two Covers And One Gloriously Unruly Centerfold

Collaboration alert: Slava Mogutin and Oli Raptor are flipping the script—and the entire publication—with their first shared zine, FLIP FLOP.

Published by London-based independent press Bona Varda, the project is designed as a true two-sided object. Begin with one cover and you enter Mogutin’s world. Turn the zine over and Raptor takes control from the opposite direction, with both artists finally meeting in a shared spread at the center.

Each artist receives 30 pages and an individual cover, creating a 62-page conversation built from analogue photography, collage, drawings and text made specifically for the release.

The images were created across London, Paris, Berlin, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Mexico City, giving the zine the feeling of a traveling visual archive rather than a single-location photo story.

Mogutin’s long-running interest in exposure, identity and provocation meets Raptor’s eye for intimacy, public performance and unguarded queer life. The artists do not flatten their styles into one polite middle ground. Instead, FLIP FLOP lets them remain fully themselves until their bodies of work physically collide at the center.

The title carries more than one meaning. It describes the book’s reversible construction, but it also plays with shifting roles, perspectives and power—who is looking, who is being seen and what happens when the viewer has to keep turning the object to continue.

Writer and curator Dominic Johnson frames the project as a queer archive of appetite and exhibition, while filmmaker and writer Bruce LaBruce praises its deliberately unruly mix of personal photography, found imagery, slogans and street-level visual culture.

The physical edition keeps that rawness tactile. FLIP FLOP is printed in a mix of color and black-and-white on 115gsm natural paper, presented in A4 format with singer-sewn binding.

Only 200 signed and numbered copies are being produced. The zine is scheduled to arrive through Bona Varda in August 2026, priced at £40.

The result is not a conventional collaboration where two names politely share a cover. FLIP FLOP is structured as a physical argument, a double entrance and a meeting point—two distinct artists refusing to choose which side should come first.
