Thirty Years In, Shawn Hatosy Is Suddenly Having His Biggest Moment Yet
Dig out thee hottie — and uber-talented actor/director — Shawn Hatosy, because after more than three decades in the business, Hollywood seems to have collectively decided it is finally time to catch up.
Hatosy joins host Scott Feinberg for a new episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter, looking back at a career that stretches from his teenage years and ’90s film work through Southland, Animal Kingdom and now the full-on phenomenon that is The Pitt.

The 72-minute conversation starts way before Dr. Jack Abbot ever walked into Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Hatosy reflects on getting into acting as a teenager and building the kind of career where the face has been familiar for years — even if the wider industry somehow took its sweet time fully recognizing just how much range was sitting there.
A huge piece of the story is his relationship with producer John Wells. The two have now worked together across roughly 20 years and five projects, a run that includes ER, Southland, Animal Kingdom and The Pitt. That last series turned Hatosy’s night-shift attending physician Dr. Jack Abbot into a breakout fan favorite and earned the actor his first Emmy in 2025.
And then there is Andrew “Pope” Cody. Across six seasons of TNT’s Animal Kingdom, Hatosy made one of television’s most volatile characters somehow terrifying, wounded, funny and painfully human at the same time. The show has since found a fresh audience on streaming, introducing a whole new group of viewers to what longtime fans already knew: Shawn can go there.
The Pitt has brought a very different energy. Abbot is calm where Pope was explosive, the kind of doctor who looks completely at home when everything around him is going sideways. Hatosy’s Season 1 performance won him the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series; for Season 2, the Television Academy moved him into the supporting-actor race, where he is nominated again in 2026.
He has also taken his work behind the camera into Pittsburgh Trauma. After directing episodes of Animal Kingdom, Hatosy directed “3:00 P.M.” during The Pitt Season 2, bringing his actor’s understanding of the show’s intricate blocking and controlled chaos into the director’s chair.
Of course, Feinberg also asks about the idea Pitt fans refuse to let die: a night-shift spinoff centered around Abbot and his after-hours crew. Hatosy sounds well aware that viewers want more. Whether HBO Max ever actually hands over the keys to the night shift is another matter — but the fact that people are asking this loudly says plenty about what he has built with a character who was never introduced as the show’s main attraction.
So yes, after 30-plus years of film sets, crime dramas, medical dramas and a whole lot of complicated men, Shawn Hatosy is suddenly thee internet’s silver fox, Emmy winner and everybody’s favorite night doctor. We’re just happy the rest of you finally showed up.
