That collision of control and chaos closed Moreno’s first-season episode of The Muppet Show, which premiered in September 1976. Nearly five decades later, the routine still feels perfectly calibrated: Moreno gives the song its smoky nightclub confidence while Animal treats every quiet space as an emergency.
What could have been a novelty number became one of the show’s defining musical moments because Moreno never plays down to the Muppets. She gives Animal a full scene partner’s attention—and eventually the kind of correction only two cymbals can deliver.

Rita Moreno Played It Straight—and That Made It Funnier
The number works because Moreno refuses to wink at the camera or treat Animal like a fuzzy prop. She stays inside the song, regains her composure after each interruption, scolds him in Spanish and English and keeps trying to drag the arrangement back toward something resembling “Fever.”
Animal, performed by Frank Oz, answers with another eruption. Every pause becomes its own tiny standoff: Moreno waits, Animal behaves for approximately half a thought, and the drums come crashing back in.
The joke is not that Rita Moreno loses control. The joke is that Animal keeps discovering how much control she has.
That chemistry is why the clip still circulates so easily. It is not nostalgia doing all the work. The timing remains sharp, the performance remains committed and the ending still lands like Animal should have read the room several drum fills earlier.
The Chaos Took More Precision Than It Lets On
Moreno later recalled that the sequence required repeated takes and that some of her exasperated Spanish-and-English asides were improvised. The finished performance looks loose because everybody involved understands exactly how long to hold the tension before breaking it again.
She also remembered eagerly telling Jim Henson that she wanted to work with the Muppets after encountering him near her New York apartment. That enthusiasm makes sense. Moreno approaches the characters as performers with personalities, not scenery waiting for a celebrity guest.
The result is glamorous, ridiculous and completely sincere—the exact mixture that made the original Muppet Show such strange and wonderful television.
Then the Emmy Made the Mayhem Official
At the 1977 Primetime Emmy Awards, Moreno won Outstanding Continuing or Single Performance by a Supporting Actress in Variety or Music for her appearance on The Muppet Show.
The honor recognized her full guest performance, with “Fever” serving as the episode’s unforgettable closer. The Television Academy has also identified Moreno as the first Hispanic woman to win an Emmy—a milestone reached through an episode involving Kermit, Miss Piggy and one drummer with no indoor voice.
