Present-Day Developments: First-Ever Jaguar Meows Recorded by Camera

Footage from Iguaçu National Park may have captured the first‑ever jaguar meow, challenging long‑held beliefs about big‑cat vocal anatomy.

Southeastern Brazil might be the first to record jaguars meowing.

Panthera species like tigers, lions, jaguars, leopards, and snow leopards can make roaring noises thanks to their larger vocal cords. It was thought, however, that jaguars and other large cats can’t meow because of their vocal cords and the morphology of their hyoid bones.

However — this footage captured on a camera trap in Iguaçu National Park begs to differ.

A rare sound. A rare moment. And a little reminder that even the fiercest creatures still have surprises tucked away in the wild.

Wild thoughts — do you think big cats have more secret sounds we haven’t heard yet?
