We’re prepping for MTV VMA Sunday, and they’re handing the opening moments to thee Pop Queen herself. Madonna will kick off the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards with her first live performance at the ceremony in 23 years, while Snoop Dogg takes hosting duties from Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater.
It also gives Madonna another VMA record: this will be her fifth time opening the show, breaking the tie she shared with Rihanna. Her previous openers came in 1989, 1993, 1998 and that unforgettable 2003 return with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott, built around “Like a Virgin” and “Hollywood.” More than two decades later, Madonna is back at the front of the telecast — exactly where VMA history tends to get interesting.

Tributes, Premieres and a Packed 2026 VMA Lineup
The rest of the performance slate is stacked. Kacey Musgraves will honor Dolly Parton, while RAYE, SOMBR and Teddy Swims join forces for a George Michael tribute. RAYE also gets her own solo performance, with LISA, Sienna Spiro, GENER8ION with Yung Lean, and Shaboozey with Gunna among the other artists set for the broadcast.
The hardware has some major names attached too. Nirvana will receive the 2026 Video Vanguard Award, while Taylor Swift receives the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors. Swift is also turning the show into a premiere night: the official video for “Patient Zero,” directed by Swift and starring Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson, will make its world debut during the telecast.
Madonna enters the night as the show’s leading nominee following Confessions II, making her opening performance more than a nostalgia booking. It’s a full-circle VMA moment for an artist whose relationship with MTV goes all the way back to the earliest years of the ceremony.
