Performance Choice of the Day: Mike D 5D struts through “Switch Up,” one of the tracks from his freshly baked, out thee oven first solo album, Thank You.

The Beastie Boys legend brought the track to Later… with Jools Holland for his debut appearance on the long-running BBC music series, backed by his 5D crew and looking very much like somebody who still knows exactly how to work a stage.

BBC Music introduced the performance as part of the lead-up to Thank You, while the album itself marks Mike D’s first full-length solo release and the first new full-length project from a Beastie Boys member since the group’s 2011 album Hot Sauce Committee Part Two.

The Mike D 5D lineup brings family directly into the mix. Skyler and Davis Diamond, Mike’s sons, are part of the band alongside Eddie Ruscha, Will Graefe and Milo Ruscha, giving this new chapter a loose, generational chemistry instead of trying to recreate Beastie Boys history beat for beat.

“Switch Up” itself is exactly the right title for what Mike is doing here. The track leans into beat-driven, post-electronic grooves while still leaving plenty of room for that unmistakable Mike D delivery. It feels familiar without sounding like a museum piece — more continuation than nostalgia.

And on Later…, the visual side helps sell it. Mike and the band arrive in coordinated stagewear and keep the performance moving with the kind of relaxed swagger that never looks like it is trying too hard. At 60, Mike D still has bounce.

The group also performed “What We Got” during the same Later… with Jools Holland appearance, but “Switch Up” is the one we are pulling forward here. It has the right mix of old-school looseness and new-era Mike D 5D energy — a proper reminder that reinvention does not have to mean abandoning what made you fun in the first place.
