“The Diplomat” Season 4 Teases Marriage Warfare and an October Return
Unleashed by thee Netflix: The Diplomat is officially heading back into political and marital warfare, with Season 4 now locked for an October 15 premiere.
The first teaser puts Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler and Rufus Sewell’s Hal Wyler right back at the center of the mess, with Kate making it clear she is not trying to escape the marriage — she is trying to get back into it. Unfortunately, romance is only one of several fires burning.

Season 4 picks up with two combustible marriages in play: Kate and Hal on one side, and President Grace Penn and First Gentleman Todd Penn on the other. Netflix’s official setup promises that one catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate brokered between the United States and United Kingdom, while Grace and Hal’s increasingly dangerous alliance threatens to push the country toward war.
That leaves Kate in the deeply uncomfortable position of having to work alongside Todd, played by Bradley Whitford, as the pair try to contain a crisis tied to a plan involving one of Russia’s most powerful weapons.
Allison Janney is back as President Grace Penn, with Whitford returning as Todd alongside Russell and Sewell. Creator Debora Cahn has teased that the new season turns up the heat between all four of them, where the personal and political are now almost impossible to separate.
So yes, diplomacy is still technically the job here. But judging by this first look, keeping the marriages intact may be the more impossible assignment.
