Florence Pugh Walks Straight Into the Darkness of Steinbeck’s Classic
Netflix has finally unleashed thee full official trailer for East of Eden, and Florence Pugh is stepping directly into one of John Steinbeck’s most infamous roles.
Pugh stars as Cathy Ames in Zoe Kazan’s seven-episode limited-series adaptation of Steinbeck’s 1952 novel. Netflix is framing this version around Cathy as the story’s indelible antihero, giving one of the book’s darkest characters far more room to take over the screen.
The trailer makes that mission pretty clear from the jump, opening with Cathy delivering Steinbeck’s own meditation on monsters, kindness and conscience. It is a sharp way into the material — less prestige-literary homework, more psychological warfare.
Alongside Pugh, the cast includes Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask, Mike Faist as Charles Trask, Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, Ciarán Hinds, Martha Plimpton, Joseph Zada and Joe Anders.
Kazan has a particularly loaded connection to this material: her grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the famous 1955 film adaptation starring James Dean. This time, though, the canvas is much wider. Netflix’s series follows multiple generations of the Trask and Hamilton families and leans into the epic scope of Steinbeck’s novel rather than narrowing the story around Cal Trask alone.
The seven-episode series premieres October 1, 2026 on Netflix, with Pugh also serving as an executive producer.
