mra’s “Critical” & Opus Kink’s “Crucify!” Take Come Thru Vocals Off Course

Saturday takes a left turn with mra’s tightly wound “Critical” before Opus Kink blow the doors open with the sprawling, horn-fueled “Crucify!”

Saturday Swerves: mra Turns “Critical” Before Opus Kink Gets Biblical

Come Thru Vocals new music discoveries selected by INYIM Media

Saturday swerves from the tightly wound pull of mra’s “Critical” straight into the glorious sprawl of Opus Kink’s “Crucify!” One keeps its tension clipped and controlled; the other lets the whole thing crack open into horns, repetition and theatrical release.

Two tracks. Two discoveries. One daily detour.

Come Thru Vocals is INYIM’s long-running daily music discovery series spotlighting voices and songs worth hearing. Selections may also move into Musique Dig’s Weekly Playlist and rotation on INYIM Radio.

WHY IT CAUGHT OUR EAR

“Critical” knows better than to show all its cards at once. mra rides a steady midtempo pulse with a vocal that stays cool and deliberate, letting the tension live in the space around it instead of forcing a giant pop payoff. It’s sleek, a little uneasy and exactly the kind of left-of-center pop that sneaks back into your head later.

WHY IT CAUGHT OUR EAR

Opus Kink apparently looked at the idea of picking one lane and politely declined. “Crucify!” stretches past six minutes, throwing its groove, Angus Rogers’ preacher-at-the-edge delivery and those glorious horns into a multi-part escalation before the back half turns increasingly communal, strange and euphoric. By the time the repeated refrain takes over and the brass starts coming apart at the seams, resistance feels fairly pointless.

Come back for the next daily detour. Keep discovering in the Come Thru Vocals archive, hear the week’s six strongest finds in Musique Dig’s Weekly Playlist, and keep the music moving on INYIM Radio.
