The setup is peak raunch-comedy era: teenager Ian sets off on an increasingly unhinged road trip after arranging to meet a girl he has been talking to online. Naturally, the simple plan becomes a parade of disasters, detours, awkward hookups, terrible choices and the sort of jokes that could only come from a studio comedy made before everyone had a camera pointed at them 24/7.
And then there is Marsden, who comes barreling into the movie with the exact level of deranged older-brother energy this story needs. Add Seth Green doing his own wonderfully odd thing, and suddenly what looks like a standard horny-teen road comedy becomes much stranger, sharper and funnier than expected.
It is absolutely crude. It is proudly dumb in spots. It is loaded with jokes that scream 2008. But that is also part of the charm. Sex Drive knows exactly what kind of movie it is and keeps moving fast enough that even the messier bits feel like part of the ride rather than a reason to bail.
If you also skipped this one when it originally rolled through theaters, consider this your late-pass permission slip. It is rude, chaotic, juvenile, occasionally ridiculous and way more entertaining than we expected nearly two decades later.
