We somehow missed this blood-soaked school-day nightmare the first time
Get your streaming calendars out. Our next Movie Watchable pick is Cooties, the gloriously nasty American zombie comedy starring Elijah Wood, Alison Pill and Rainn Wilson that somehow slipped right past us the first time around.
And watching it in 2026? Oh, this is exactly the kind of dumb, gory, black-comedy horror we want when we do not need a movie taking itself too seriously — especially if children are already not exactly your favorite demographic.
Technically, Cooties made its world premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, which is why you will often see it identified as a 2014 film. Lionsgate Premiere later released it in U.S. theaters and on demand on September 18, 2015.

The Kids Have Cooties — Except These Cooties Eat People
The setup is beautifully ridiculous. A virus makes its way into an elementary school through contaminated chicken nuggets, turning the prepubescent students into a feral, flesh-eating swarm. Suddenly the teachers are not worrying about lesson plans, parent conferences or who stole whose pencil.
They are trying not to get eaten.
Wood plays Clint Hadson, a substitute teacher who returns to his hometown and walks directly into the worst Monday imaginable. Alison Pill plays Lucy, while Rainn Wilson is Wade, the aggressively confident PE teacher. The wonderfully odd faculty also includes Jack McBrayer, Nasim Pedrad, Jorge Garcia and Leigh Whannell.
The Saw Guy Helped Write This Thing — Which Explains Plenty
Another reason this one works for us: the screenplay comes from Leigh Whannell and Ian Brennan. Yes, that Leigh Whannell — co-creator and writer of Saw, later behind films including Upgrade and The Invisible Man. Here, he also appears onscreen as the socially bizarre science teacher Doug.
Directed by Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion, Cooties understands that its premise is already outrageous. Rather than pretending otherwise, it leans into gross-out violence, absurd teacher personalities, playground panic and the simple joy of watching adults realize the tiny humans they are supposed to protect would now very much like to chew their faces off.
Why Cooties Is Our Kind of 2026 Rediscovery
Is it high art? No. Is that remotely the assignment? Also no.
This is a Movie Watchable. The kind of movie you stumble onto years late and immediately wonder how it escaped your trashy-horror radar. It is compact, ridiculous, knowingly nasty and built around one of those concepts you can explain to somebody in a sentence: zombie children attack their teachers after eating infected chicken nuggets.
Sometimes that is all a movie needs to give us.
