Monday Muse: Cher said RAISE THE CURTAIN! The glitter-soaked 2010 musical Burlesque, starring Cher and Christina Aguilera, officially joined Hulu on September 1, 2026. So yes, the curtain is back up, the eyeliner is back on, and Tess is once again running the room.

Directed by Steve Antin, the film follows Ali, a small-town singer who lands in Los Angeles and finds her way into a struggling burlesque club owned by Tess. Aguilera plays Ali opposite Cher’s Tess, with Stanley Tucci, Cam Gigandet, Eric Dane, Kristen Bell, Julianne Hough and Alan Cumming filling out a cast built for maximum backstage drama.

Part backstage melodrama, part vocal showcase, part full-tilt costume fantasy, Burlesque has long outlived the idea that it was simply another 2010 studio musical. Its appeal is right there in the collision: Aguilera arriving at full vocal force, Cher treating every entrance like architecture, and a movie that understands subtlety was never the assignment.

The soundtrack did plenty of heavy lifting too. Cher’s “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” won the 2011 Golden Globe for Best Original Song, while Aguilera’s “Bound to You” earned a nomination in the same category. That combination of camp-scale spectacle and genuinely serious vocal material is a big reason the film still feels bigger than its original release moment.

And then there is Cher. Tess was never going to quietly manage a club from the shadows. She gets the film’s grandest emotional punctuation, the best stare-downs and the kind of screen authority that can make a line reading feel like a lighting cue. RAISE THE CURTAIN, indeed.
