Paramount Pictures has unveiled the official trailer for Karl, director Nick Hooker’s documentary portrait of the designer whose career stretched across seven decades and reshaped the fortunes of Chanel, Fendi and Chloé while turning Lagerfeld himself into one of fashion’s most instantly recognizable figures.
The film is built around more than the powdered ponytail, sunglasses and high collars. Karl digs into the sharp wit, ambition, control, contradictions and private life behind the image, using access to Lagerfeld’s personal archives alongside interviews with people who knew, worked with and moved through his world.

The Man Behind the Iconic Silhouette
Adapted from William Middleton’s biography Paradise Now, the documentary traces Lagerfeld’s rise from outsider to global icon and the way he repeatedly reinvented established fashion houses instead of simply inheriting their mythology. Hooker’s film also turns toward the more personal mythology Lagerfeld built around himself — the persona that could be funny, cutting, elusive and completely in control of the room.
The voices helping tell that story are fashion and culture heavyweights in their own right. The film features Tilda Swinton, Tom Ford, Penélope Cruz, Vanessa Paradis, Lily-Rose Depp and Paloma Picasso, alongside friends, collaborators and members of Lagerfeld’s longtime inner circle.
That matters here because Karl is not being sold as a simple career highlight reel. The documentary positions Lagerfeld as both creator and creation: a designer who revived historic houses, built an unmistakable public identity and somehow made the person named Karl as recognizable as the clothes carrying somebody else’s label.

Paramount’s trailer lists October 6, 2026 for the documentary’s buy-or-rent release. The finished film runs about 1 hour and 50 minutes, giving Hooker room to move through the fashion, the persona and the people around Lagerfeld instead of squeezing one of fashion’s biggest careers into a quick glossy recap.
For anyone who has ever understood that fashion history can be just as dramatic, petty, brilliant and theatrical as anything Hollywood dreams up, this one is very much getting marked on the calendar.
