The Pop Landmark Opens Its Vault Without Disturbing The Fantasy
Mariah Carey is celebrating the 30th anniversary of her landmark album Daydream by opening the vault and letting the Lambily hear how some of its most beloved songs first took shape.
Daydream: 30th Anniversary Edition is available digitally now through Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings. The expanded release pairs the original 1995 album with rare remixes, B-sides, live recordings, a cappella versions and previously unreleased material from Carey’s private songwriting sessions.
As Mariah put it, Daydream “marked an era of firsts” for her: her first rap collaboration through the iconic “Fantasy” remix with Ol’ Dirty Bastard, her first work with Jermaine Dupri, her first world tour and her first time directing a music video on her own.

The biggest first on this edition may be the release of rough writing-session demos for “Melt Away” and “I Am Free.” Carey said she had never previously agreed to share those private sessions, offering listeners a rare glimpse of the songs before the final harmonies, production polish and vocal architecture were locked into place.
“Melt Away” was co-written and co-produced with Babyface, while “I Am Free” was created with longtime collaborator Walter Afanasieff. Hearing those songs in unfinished form shifts the anniversary away from a simple greatest-hits repackaging and toward something closer to an open songwriting notebook.
The expanded digital edition also gathers the O.D.B.-assisted “Fantasy” remix, “Always Be My Baby” with Da Brat and Xscape, the fan-favorite B-sides “Slipping Away” and “One Night,” live cuts from Madison Square Garden, Tokyo Dome and Rotterdam, plus extended a cappella versions that place Mariah’s layered vocal arrangements directly under the microscope.
A new Eric Kupper remix of “Underneath the Stars” joins the collection, giving one of the album’s silkiest deep cuts another chance to drift into the spotlight. The song has long been a Lambily favorite, and the fresh club treatment expands the era without trying to modernize away everything that made it glow in the first place.
The anniversary campaign is not stopping with streaming. On October 16, the release expands into 3LP vinyl, 2CD and cassette editions. The triple-vinyl set includes Carey’s complete 1995 Live at Madison Square Garden concert, while the CD and deluxe digital configurations add previously unreleased performances of “Open Arms” and “Always Be My Baby” from Rotterdam in 1996.
There is also a limited baby-pink vinyl edition of the original album, because Mariah has never confused archival preservation with being visually boring. Amazon Music is offering a track-by-track experience in which Carey revisits the original record in her own words.
Originally released in 1995, Daydream became one of the defining pop and R&B records of its decade. “Fantasy” made history as the first song by a female artist to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, while “One Sweet Day” with Boyz II Men and “Always Be My Baby” extended the album’s chart domination.
The era also sharpened Mariah’s role as an architect of the pop-and-hip-hop crossover that would soon become standard industry language. Pairing her gleaming melodies with O.D.B. on the “Fantasy” remix was not merely a novelty guest verse—it helped redraw what mainstream pop radio could sound like.
Carey is extending the celebration on July 20 with the premiere of a previously unseen “Making of Fantasy” featurette. The behind-the-scenes footage revisits the amusement-park video that she directed herself, capturing another of those firsts before the world fully understood how much control she was beginning to claim over her image and sound.
Thirty years later, Daydream still floats like pop perfection—but these demos, performances and studio fragments reveal the work beneath the shimmer. That is the real anniversary gift: not just hearing the finished fantasy again, but catching Mariah while she was building it.
