Brooklyn’s Runway Got a Lauryn Hill Plot Twist

Lauryn Hill made a surprise appearance at KidSuper’s The People’s Runway during New York Fashion Week — and naturally, showing up was not enough. Hill turned the Brooklyn fashion crowd into a concert crowd with the Fugees classic “Ready or Not.”

The moment landed at Brooklyn Borough Hall Plaza on September 12, where KidSuper founder and Brooklyn Arts Ambassador Colm Dillane brought back The People’s Runway as part of the CFDA’s Spring/Summer 2027 New York Fashion Week calendar.

The show itself was designed to pull fashion week out of the invite-only bubble and put emerging Brooklyn talent directly in front of the city. Five designers — Kuai Li, Lamin Rey Jaiteh, Laurel Tiange Fang, Moses Aina and Roderick Reyes — were selected for the 2026 edition, each receiving funding and mentorship as part of the KidSuper and Brooklyn Borough President initiative.

Hill already had history with the event: she sat front row at the inaugural People’s Runway in 2025 alongside names including Busta Rhymes, Ne-Yo and A$AP Ferg. A year later, she did considerably more than observe.

And really, if Lauryn Hill is going to unexpectedly materialize at a Brooklyn fashion show, “Ready or Not” is about as correct an entrance as one could ask for. The 1996 Fugees anthem still has that immediate first-note recognition — the kind of song that can turn a runway crowd into a choir before anyone has time to process what is happening.

That collision is what makes the KidSuper event work: fashion, civic space, emerging designers, Brooklyn energy — and apparently the possibility that a living music icon might step in and casually drop a Fugees classic into the middle of it.
