Josh O’Connor Steps Into The Ring For Golden Boy
“I’m out for fame and fortune, not to be different or artistic! I don’t intend to be ashamed of my life!”
That line lands like a warning bell before the first punch. Josh O’Connor is taking on Joe Bonaparte in Golden Boy, the Clifford Odets classic headed back to London’s Almeida Theatre with Sam Yates directing.
Set in 1930s New York at the height of the Depression, the play follows a gifted young violinist pulled toward the brutal glamour of professional boxing. The hook is pure old-world drama: talent, hunger, family pressure, forbidden desire, and the question of what a person gives up when fame starts calling too loudly.
The Almeida has the revival running from Wednesday, September 9 through Saturday, October 31, 2026, with opening night set for Tuesday, September 15. The production also brings a live string quartet into the room, sharpening the tension between Joe’s musical future and the ring that threatens to swallow it whole.
The cast around O’Connor is a stacked one: Jason Barnett, Richard Fleeshman, David Ganly, Patrick Martins, Daniel Mays, Oliver Ryan, Hayley Squires, Stanley Townsend, Zubin Varla, and Nicholas Woodeson.
Behind the scenes, Rosanna Vize handles set and costume design, with James Farncombe on lighting, Dan Balfour on sound, Isobel Waller-Bridge composing, Jack Phelan on video design, Imogen Knight on movement, and Kate Waters as fight director.
For O’Connor, it is a juicy stage return: a character split between beauty and brutality, art and ambition, the decent life and the bright terrible promise of becoming somebody.
