Helen Mirren Turns Patricia Highsmith Into One Very Dangerous Assignment
Academy Award winner Helen Mirren is stepping into the sharp, unsettling world of Patricia Highsmith for A Talent for Murder, Anton Corbijn’s new psychological thriller — and judging by the first trailer, nobody is arriving in Switzerland for a polite little literary meeting.
Mirren stars as Highsmith, the famously prickly author behind Tom Ripley, opposite Alden Ehrenreich as a youthful literary agent sent from New York with what sounds simple enough on paper: convince the reclusive writer to produce one final installment in the Ripley series.
Of course, when Patricia Highsmith is involved, “simple” should probably be removed from the vocabulary.

The setup comes from Joanna Murray-Smith’s 2014 play Switzerland, which Murray-Smith adapted for the screen. Corbijn — the filmmaker and photographer behind Control and A Most Wanted Man — directs, giving the material exactly the kind of cool, controlled visual tension we would want anywhere near Highsmith.
And this is not being framed as a conventional cradle-to-grave biopic. The film instead imagines a strange confrontation between Highsmith and the young agent who arrives at her secluded Swiss home, turning a publishing mission into a psychological duel where fiction, manipulation and the mind of a killer begin circling one another.
Olivia Cooke also joins the cast as Clementine Balfour. The film’s principal cast additionally includes Juliet Stevenson, while Mirren and Ehrenreich remain at the center of the movie’s increasingly slippery game of wills.
There is something especially delicious about Mirren taking on Highsmith: two formidable women, one real and one being re-created on screen, with very little interest in making anybody else comfortable. The trailer leans into that menace rather than sanding it down, letting Mirren’s Highsmith feel clever, withholding and just unpredictable enough to make every exchange look like a trap waiting to close.
A Talent for Murder is scheduled to make its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival before opening in U.S. theaters on October 23, 2026 through Bleecker Street and LD Entertainment.
Or perhaps Mirren simply has a talent for playing the twist before the rest of us even realize the knife is on the table.
