The television visit landed alongside Gray’s Aug. 7–8 run at Blue Note Los Angeles, with two performances scheduled each night at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. That is four chances for L.A. to hear the classics and get an early taste of what she has cooking next.
That taste includes a new song titled “Somewhere Over the Moon,” which Gray planned to perform before anyone had officially heard it. She described the roughly 200-seat Blue Note as an intimate, dark room with a sound system so sharp that it feels like listening from inside the studio.
As for the album title, Macy put it perfectly: the truth is always a little messy—and risky. People demand honesty, she joked, then get upset when they actually receive it. That push and pull runs through the record’s lyrics, and Gray confidently called it her best album.
Of course, the conversation circled back to “I Try,” the defining hit audiences still sing back word for word more than 25 years later. Gray admitted that nobody remains more surprised by its longevity than she does, adding that the song still draws roughly four million streams a month. When asked why it connected so deeply, her answer was gloriously Macy: she still has no idea.

Gray also revealed that a memoir is in the works and shared the message she hopes younger people carry with them: find the moments when you can stop worrying about judgment or consequences and simply be yourself. Between the new record, the memoir and a packed Los Angeles weekend, Macy is not simply circling back—she is moving forward on her own beautifully unfiltered terms.
