Cover Boy Max Hoek Lets the Light Do the Seducing

Cover Boy Max Hoek slips into the shadows and soft glow of “Room Light,” photographed by Jarrod Adams. No overworked set, no distracting theatrics — just Hoek, the camera and that intimate kind of light that can turn an ordinary room into something far more suggestive.
Adams keeps the mood close and unfussy, allowing the smallest shifts in expression and posture to carry the editorial. Hoek has the kind of face that doesn’t need much assistance, and here the restraint works in his favor. The photographs feel quiet without ever becoming sleepy.

Max Hoek in Room Light
Jarrod Adams strips the fashion editorial back to its most reliable ingredients: a strong model, a camera and beautifully controlled light.

There’s also something pleasingly old-school about Room Light. Before every menswear story needed an elaborate location, a concept paragraph and ten layers of production, sometimes a photographer simply knew when the subject was enough. Adams does. Hoek certainly is.
The result has a private, almost after-hours quality — less glossy campaign, more stolen editorial moment. It’s handsome without begging for attention, which may be exactly why it keeps it.
