Colin Kaepernick finally says the quiet parts out loud

Colin Kaepernick visited What Now? with Trevor Noah and did one thing: told the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth — at least from his perspective, and with more detail than we have heard him give in years.
The September 17 episode is titled “Colin Kaepernick: The NFL Tried to Buy My Silence”, and the conversation reaches well beyond the headline. Kaepernick talks about growing up as a Black child adopted by a white family in Turlock, California, the importance of his hair and identity, his rise from backup quarterback to the Super Bowl, the anthem protest, the years that followed and what he says was happening behind closed doors while the NFL publicly tried to manage the controversy.

Kaepernick sits down with Trevor Noah and Eugene for a long-form conversation about identity, football, protest, the NFL and the details he says were never fully told.

Colin tells the parts he says he has never fully told before: what NFL owners said in the room, an offer he says was made while he was being blackballed, and the Jay-Z call that never happened. The episode description itself puts those revelations front and center, and hearing Kaepernick walk through the sequence in his own words gives the story a weight that clipped headlines never really could.
We adore Colin. He has done so much to remain a positive response in ugly situations and times. What makes this interview work is not just the subject matter but the storytelling. It is a meeting of intelligent, caring men willing to stay with difficult ideas instead of racing toward the next sound bite. A rare viewing event in 2026. We thank you boys. Courage and bravery are not common nowadays. We need more of this. Good souls.
Trevor’s kindness, openness, worldliness and genuine curiosity make him the perfect fit to engage with Kaepernick in this space. He gives the conversation room to breathe while still pressing for specifics, and Eugene’s presence keeps it feeling like an actual exchange rather than an interrogation built for clips.
Kaepernick revisits the protest, the NFL and what happened afterward
Trevor shines the light back on Kaepernick’s peaceful protest and the point that got buried beneath years of argument about the anthem itself: Kaepernick has consistently described the protest as a response to racial injustice and police violence. In the episode, he revisits the consequences that followed and his belief that the league tried to contain the fallout rather than confront what he was protesting.
Kaepernick also goes directly into the NFL’s later social-justice strategy and Jay-Z’s partnership with the league. He describes Jay-Z, in his opinion, as a second attempt to put a prominent Black public figure in front of the NFL’s response while Kaepernick remained outside the league. Those are Kaepernick’s allegations and interpretation of what happened — but hearing him explain the timeline himself is one of the interview’s most striking stretches.
This is where our ears really perked up. Out of everything covered, the current Jay-Z debate becomes one of the clearest examples of how Kaepernick believes power, access and public messaging were being managed around him. We have had our own questions about Jay-Z’s role in these institutions for years, but Kaepernick is speaking here about his own experience and his own interpretation. Just listen to the episode. It is as plain as common sense what he believes happened.
There is also a much larger life story underneath the NFL chapter. Kaepernick talks about identity, being raised in a white family, the politics attached to his hair, how quickly his football career changed once he became a starter and why he ultimately decided he could no longer separate his platform from what he was seeing around him.
This is going to be one of the greatest interviews of this year for us. We are stunned by the strength it takes to spill such honest details, but WE ARE NOT surprised by much of what we heard. The reason the conversation lands is that Kaepernick is not speaking in slogans. He is walking through memory, context and decisions, and Trevor lets him finish the thought.
