Dig out Burberry unleashing its 170: The Anniversary Portraits — a freshly delivered campaign marking 170 years of the British house through the thing that has sat at the center of its story from the beginning: outerwear.

Rather than turning the anniversary into one giant celebrity roll call, Burberry spreads the celebration across London, New York, Seoul and Shanghai, photographing 170 people in 10 signature outerwear styles. The idea is simple but very Burberry: the coat may be iconic, but the person inside it is what gives it character.

The anniversary campaign brings 170 people across four cities into Burberry’s signature coats, trenches, quilts and puffers.

Jack Day photographed the portrait series, while Hector Aponysus directed the accompanying film. Burberry says the project brings together street-cast locals, creative figures, athletes, musicians and long-standing members of the company itself — a broad cross-section rather than a single polished idea of who gets to wear the house.

The campaign runs through familiar Burberry codes including the Kensington and Waterloo Heritage Trench Coats, the Camden Heritage Car Coat, quilted outerwear, puffers, cashmere trenches and a leather Kensington trench jacket. It also looks back to the house’s archive campaign The Art of the Trench, reviving that same emphasis on individuality for a new generation.

And this is where the campaign earns its title: not one definitive Burberry image, but a stack of individual ones. Different cities, different faces, different styling — all orbiting the same outerwear vocabulary that has carried the house from 1856 to 2026.

The result is less about nostalgia than continuity. Burberry is using the anniversary to remind everyone that the trench, the car coat, the quilt and the puffer only stay relevant when people keep finding new ways to wear them. One hundred and seventy years later, that basic proposition still holds up rather well.

For the full project, including the wider portrait gallery and campaign film, Burberry has the complete anniversary experience live on its site.
