One Hour of Air Turns Whalefall Into a Claustrophobic Nightmare
Get your snacks, beverages and maybe leave the claustrophobia at home. 20th Century Studios has dropped the new official trailer for Whalefall, the upcoming survival thriller starring Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin — and being swallowed alive by a whale is apparently only the beginning of the problem.
Abrams stars as Jay Gardiner, a young scuba diver who heads into the waters off California’s Central Coast searching for the remains of his late father, Mitt Gardiner, played by Brolin. Then the ocean decides Jay has not suffered enough: he is swallowed by a massive sperm whale and trapped inside with roughly one hour of oxygen left.

The setup sounds almost too wild to be real, which is exactly why it works as a movie hook. Inside the whale, Jay has to ration his air, navigate a place no human being is supposed to be navigating and somehow turn the survival lessons his father drilled into him into an escape plan. The trailer pushes the physical danger hard, but the father-son relationship is clearly doing just as much of the heavy lifting underneath all that seawater and panic.
Whalefall is directed by Brian Duffield, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Daniel Kraus, author of the 2023 novel the film is based on. Duffield previously wrote and directed No One Will Save You, so putting one person in an impossible situation and making us squirm for the duration is not exactly unfamiliar territory.
And yes, they actually had to build this mess. Duffield said the production spent a summer working inside a whale environment constructed on a soundstage in Studio City, California — which at least confirms the cast did not have to wait around for an unusually cooperative 60-ton co-star.
The film also stars Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy and Emily Rudd. Behind the scenes, producers include Brian Grazer, Brian Duffield, Jeb Brody and Allan Mandelbaum, with 20th Century Studios and Imagine Entertainment bringing Kraus’ very bad day at sea to the big screen.
The earlier teaser already sold the nightmare of waking up inside something enormous, alive and moving. This new trailer opens the story up further, showing that Whalefall is aiming for more than a monster-movie gimmick. Jay is not simply fighting to get out of a whale; he is carrying grief, unfinished business with his father and the uncomfortable realization that the man he lost may have already taught him how to survive.
So yes, the odds of being swallowed alive by a whale may be very, very small. Whalefall would simply like to remind us that “very small” is not the same thing as zero. Rude.
