Sarah Vaughan was an American jazz singer whose extraordinary range, harmonic sophistication and instrumental phrasing made her one of the great vocalists of the 20th century. A Newark native, she won Amateur Night at the Apollo in 1942 and soon worked with Earl Hines and Billy Eckstine before beginning a landmark solo career. Recordings including “Tenderly,” “Misty,” “Broken-Hearted Melody,” “Whatever Lola Wants” and her 1954 album with Clifford Brown demonstrated a voice equally at home in bebop, standards and lush orchestral pop.
