Past Blast Musique: Christina Aguilera Caught the Electro Club Wave

Past Blast Musique rewinds to Christina Aguilera at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, when the vintage glamour of Back to Basics gave way to something colder, shinier and increasingly familiar to anyone spending time in indie clubs during that era: electro.
On September 7, 2008, Aguilera performed “Genie 2.0” and “Keeps Gettin’ Better” at Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles, giving viewers an early look at the electronic direction she was moving toward.
Electro, electroclash and synth-heavy club music had already been bubbling through indie nightlife for years, and Christina was beginning to absorb that atmosphere into her own pop world.
“Genie 2.0” Rewired Her First Hit for the Electro Era
The performance opened with “Genie 2.0,” a darker electronic reworking of her 1999 smash. Instead of simply reaching backward for nostalgia, Christina rebuilt the song for the sound of the moment.
That shift now feels like an important bridge in Christina’s catalog. The 2008 VMAs came before Bionic, but the seeds were already there: colder synths, electronic production and the kind of club-minded pop that had been thriving outside mainstream radio.
In hindsight, this performance plays like a precursor to the 2010 Bionic era, when Aguilera would move even deeper into electronic pop and collaborate with artists from the indie-electronic world, including Ladytron. The album has since grown into a cult classic among fans, making this VMA performance feel even more like an early transmission from what was coming next.

Then Came “Keeps Gettin’ Better”
From there she moved into “Keeps Gettin’ Better,” the new single that would headline her first greatest-hits collection, Keeps Gettin’ Better: A Decade of Hits. The track worked as both a retrospective marker and a preview of where her sound was heading next: electronic, glossy and increasingly connected to the synth-driven club music shaping late-2000s indie dance floors.
Christina was nearly a decade into her career, but instead of turning the VMAs into a victory lap, she used the stage like a reset button. “Genie” was still there, only rebuilt. The new single was already pushing forward. Old Christina and the early shape of the Bionic era met in the same performance.
