Drew Barrymore on David Spade, Ghosting & Her “Makeout Bandit” Era

David Spade says he thinks he and Drew Barrymore made out years ago. The only problem? He can’t quite remember whether it actually happened — and, apparently, neither can Drew.
During a very loose relationship-and-dating chat with Chelsea Handler, Barrymore was asked to finally set the record straight after Spade floated the story on his podcast. Her answer was basically: yeah, probably.

Drew Barrymore’s Makeout Mystery
David Spade remembers just enough to ask the question. Drew remembers just little enough to leave it deliciously unresolved.

Handler immediately gave the possibility her vote of confidence, joking that at some point, “everyone has made out with David Spade.” Barrymore, meanwhile, admitted there’s a fairly practical reason she can’t provide a clean yes-or-no answer: “I drank for like two decades.”
Then came the better confession. Barrymore described her younger self as a full-on “makeout bandit” and said kissing was practically part of her introduction: “My hello had tongue.” She recalled walking up to people, grabbing them by the shirt and simply starting to make out — which, frankly, does make Spade’s memory sound entirely plausible.

Barrymore added that she’d actually just seen Spade recently and he didn’t mention the alleged makeout then. So for now, this one remains in that perfect celebrity-history category: probably happened, nobody remembers enough to swear to it.
The conversation then swerved into a dating trend called “doppel banging” — sleeping with or dating someone who looks uncannily like you — which prompted Barrymore to look back at her marriage to Tom Green and joke that they looked so much alike they eventually behaved like siblings.
The panel also ran through celebrity couples with similar features, including Dylan Sprouse and Barbara Palvin, Seth Meyers and Alexi Ashe, and Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst. Handler’s verdict was essentially that most people have a type anyway — sometimes the type just starts looking suspiciously familiar.
As for whether Handler herself would date a literal male look-alike? She didn’t exactly shut the door: “I won’t say no to anything.” Which feels like the appropriate ending for a segment that began with a possibly forgotten David Spade makeout.

Yamaneika Saunders supplied the real punchline in another round of ghost stories — the dating kind. She recalled trying to get rid of a man who would not take the hint, eventually inventing an elaborate story about being in a mental institution and taking a medication she completely made up.

The plan worked a little too well. After Saunders claimed she was being called back to a mental institution and blurted out a fake drug name — “Nephoperin” — the man finally backed away and never called again. Her response? Mock outrage: “You didn’t want to fight for this?!”
That kicked the panel into a broader conversation about ghosting, with Drew Barrymore admitting she recently realized she had done the very thing she hates having done to her. After exchanging texts with someone who asked her out, she did a little “due diligence,” decided their lives were not compatible and then simply stopped replying.
Barrymore immediately felt the hypocrisy of it: “Oh my God, I did the thing that I complain about having done to me.” Saunders’ takeaway was simple — if you engage with someone, give them enough respect to disengage honestly. Drew agreed, saying she now had a script she could actually use: “Hey baby, it wasn’t the time for us, but I wish you well.”
The segment also features Jared Freid’s chaotic wedding-fire ghosting story before Yamaneika Saunders lands the biggest laugh with hers.
