Fourteen Years Later, “Losing You” Still Floats on Its Own Frequency

Zephyring 14 years ago! Solange unveiled the dreamsicle dynamo tune “Losing You,” the Dev Hynes co-written and produced lead single that would open her True EP.
Released in October 2012, “Losing You” arrived as a bright, melancholy left turn: shimmering synths, clipped percussion and Solange’s coolly aching vocal all moving together without ever feeling overworked. It still sounds suspended somewhere between heartbreak and the dance floor.

Solange — “Losing You”
Fourteen years later, Solange’s “Losing You” remains one of the defining singles from her True era — dreamy, restless and impossible to pin down to one lane.

The song was co-written by Solange and Dev Hynes, with Hynes producing, and it became the first taste of the seven-track True EP, released later that November through Terrible Records.
Its visual world mattered just as much. Directed by Melina Matsoukas and filmed in Cape Town, South Africa, the video places Solange among friends and members of the sharply dressed Le Sapeurs community, giving the song a color-rich, loose and lived-in visual counterpart rather than the usual glossy pop-video machinery.
That combination — melancholy wrapped in motion, softness paired with rhythm, elegance without stiffness — is exactly why “Losing You” has never really aged. Fourteen years later, the track still feels like its own little weather system.
