Fourteen Years Later, “Everything Is Embarrassing” Still Feels Effortlessly Cool

Zephyring 14 years ago, Sky Ferreira delivered the euphoric, timeless “Everything Is Embarrassing” music video and we’re still enamored.
That immaculate October 2012 drop enhanced an already-there chorus. That production, that whole era. A song that already sounded like longing caught halfway between the dance floor and the drive home suddenly had the perfect visual companion: stripped-down, black-and-white, and simply Sky moving through Los Angeles.
Directed by Grant Singer, the video was shot in a single day with no real budget after Capitol requested a clip for the song. Ferreira moves through locations around Los Angeles — including the Metro, a playground, stairwells and rooftops — with none of the overbuilt pop-video machinery she had already spent years pushing against. It premiered through Pitchfork on October 1, 2012.

Sky Ferreira — Everything Is Embarrassing
Fourteen years later, the song still sounds immaculate and the no-budget Los Angeles video still looks cooler than productions that spent considerably more.

“Everything Is Embarrassing” was written by Ferreira, Dev Hynes and Ariel Rechtshaid, with Hynes and Rechtshaid producing. It became the closing track on her Ghost EP, released later that month, and quickly turned into one of those records whose reputation kept growing long after the release cycle was supposed to have moved on.

Hollywood, the Capitol Tower and One Very Bitter Bit of Foreshadowing
The video is simple: Ferreira around Hollywood and Los Angeles, with the city doing most of the production design. But one location hits very differently now — the Capitol Records tower, home of the label that was then releasing her music.
That is the only thing embarrassing here.
Ferreira spent years publicly describing a deeply troubled relationship with Capitol and saying the situation prevented her from releasing music. Fans eventually turned “Free Sky Ferreira” into a campaign, including a Times Square billboard and a plane banner flown over the Capitol Records building. She exited Capitol in 2024 and has since described the old deal as having made it impossible for her to work freely for more than a decade. In 2026, she confirmed she had signed a new label deal.
So watching a 2012 Sky literally perform on and around the building connected to so much of what followed now lands with an accidental irony nobody could have planned. She eventually got out. The aftermath of that deal, though, is still part of the story she has been trying to work her way beyond.

Fourteen years later, none of that has dulled the record itself. The beat still glides. The chorus still detonates without needing to shout. Sky still looks like she wandered into the camera’s path rather than arrived for a production call. We will always have this one in rotation over at INYIM Radio.

And maybe that is the real trick of “Everything Is Embarrassing.” Fourteen years, one former label, countless delays and an entire music industry cycle later, the thing that refuses to become embarrassing is the song.
