Dion Warwick Divorced Her Husband After One Week — Then Married Him Again

Ms. Dion visits Thanks Dad with Ego Nwodim, Pepsi in hand — and within minutes, the legendary singer is casually telling one of the wildest marriage stories we’ve heard in a minute.

Over the course of the conversation, Dion Warwick moves through love, motherhood, parenting, AI, social media, aging, therapy, career, family and the simple art of saying “no” with the kind of matter-of-fact delivery that makes even the most outrageous revelation sound perfectly reasonable.

And that is really the charm here. Ego is clearly delighted to be sitting across from someone who has lived enough life to answer almost anything without flinching, while Dion seems perfectly content to answer the question, correct the premise and keep it moving.

OMG #1: Dion Divorced Her Husband After About One Week

Yes, you read that correctly. Warwick tells Ego that after marrying drummer William “Bill” Elliott at her mother’s home, she woke up roughly a week later and realized marriage was not for her.

Her solution? She flew to Mexico and got a divorce.

Then she returned to New Jersey, walked back into the apartment and told Bill where she had been. As Dion remembers it, the explanation was basically: “I went to Mexico. I got us a divorce.” Casual.

But the story somehow gets better. While Warwick was later performing in Italy, she walked onto the stage and spotted Bill sitting in the front row. He had come after her. He proposed again, and a few days later the two were married for a second time by the mayor of the city.

That version lasted. Warwick says they went back to New Jersey and stayed together for years, raising their two sons before she eventually decided once again that marriage simply was not the life she wanted.

OMG #2: Dion Warwick Is Very Much Against AI

The conversation takes an unexpected turn when Ego brings up how children now type assignments on computers and use AI. Warwick does not hedge.

She says she is “very much against AI” because she believes technology is stripping away social connection — people talking to each other, writing notes, sending cards and actually learning how to communicate.

That concern quickly folds into a bigger criticism of modern parenting. Warwick argues that parenting has become almost “moot” in too many homes and says children need parents, not adults trying to become their friends.

OMG #3: She Hates Rules — But Only Recently Learned the Power of “No”

Dion admits she was the wild one in the family and has hated rules since she was a teenager. In her view, plenty of things people call “rules” are really just demands — and she has never enjoyed being told what she must do.

Oddly enough, though, she says the word she struggled with for years was the simplest one: no.

Warwick says people knew she could be tough but also knew she was soft enough to be persuaded. Eventually she learned that “no” was a powerful word, and once she finally started using it, she discovered she rather enjoyed it.

OMG #4: Why Dion Warwick Is Not Feeling X Like She Felt Twitter

For anyone who remembers Warwick becoming one of Twitter’s greatest unexpected personalities, there is an update: she is not nearly as interested in the platform now that it is X.

Warwick says she is less comfortable there because the community feels different. She recalls joining Twitter after her nieces and nephews showed her what they were laughing at, deciding the platform needed a “grownup,” and then having enormous fun teasing celebrities and telling people to say what they needed to say — but end it with a smile.

Now, she says she sometimes sees things on the platform that make her stop and wonder what happened to the space she once enjoyed. She still pops onto social media when the urge strikes, but the old Twitter love affair clearly is not what it used to be.

OMG #5: No Therapy — Dion Says, “I Like Me”

Ego asks Warwick whether she has ever gone to therapy after Dion says she has no trouble laughing at herself and sometimes needs to get “Dion” out of her own way.

The answer is no.

Warwick says she considers herself a realist, has never felt the need to become somebody she is not and lands on one of the cleanest lines of the entire interview: “I like me. And I practice being me.”

She also says she does not spend much energy trying to change other people. Her philosophy is that people eventually have to recognize for themselves when something is not working and decide to do it differently.

OMG #6: Dion Warwick Learned to Skateboard for Her Sons

One of the sweetest surprises comes when Warwick explains what raising sons David and Damon Elliott looked like as a single mother.

She says she became their quarterback and learned to do whatever they were doing — including skateboarding, basketball and baseball. Her sons ultimately chose very different paths: David became a deep-sea diver and instructor in Honduras, while Damon became a record producer who now works on his mother’s recordings.

Her parenting rule was simple: she did not decide their lives for them. She asked what they wanted to do and backed them once they found their lane.

OMG #7: At 85, Dion Warwick Has Zero Interest in Anti-Aging

Warwick tells Ego she is heading into her 86th year after spending 66 years walking onto stages and entertaining audiences. Yes, the walk is a little slower now. Yes, her back occasionally tells her “no.” But she refuses to treat getting older like some kind of failure.

When Ego brings up the entertainment industry’s obsession with anti-aging, Dion’s reaction is basically: why?

Getting older means you are living. That is her entire argument. Rather than panic over age, she says people should enjoy the fact that they got there.

She credits her grandfather with another philosophy she still carries: arguing and frowning give you wrinkles, smiling does not. Dion loves to smile, so as far as she is concerned, problem solved.

Something Else to Know: She’s Supporting The Good League

Warwick also uses the interview to spotlight The Good League, an organization created by three of her nieces to help children — particularly in Black communities — get access to sports including tennis, football, basketball and baseball.

She says the program has already helped young athletes participate while also encouraging parents to get involved, removing some of the cost and access barriers that can keep kids away from organized sports.

And No, Dion Warwick Does Not Want a Reality Show

During Ego’s rapid-fire “Thanks or No Thanks” game, Warwick gives an immediate no to the idea of a Dion Warwick reality series.

Her reasoning is vintage Dion: you already know enough about her — and those things called “reality” shows are not always particularly real anyway.

She is, however, fully prepared to accept a lifetime supply of Hellmann’s mayonnaise. Apparently it belongs on baloney, ham, potato salad and basically anything else that will stand still long enough. Priorities.
