Zephyring Back to Britney’s Full-Scale “Womanizer” Pop Comeback
Zephyring 18 years ago, Britney Spears unleashed “Womanizer” as the lead single from her Circus era — and Miss Spears did not exactly ease her way back into the room.
Released on September 26, 2008, “Womanizer” arrived with the kind of relentless electropop hook that made the whole thing feel less like a tentative return and more like Britney kicking the doors open again. The track was written and produced by The Outsyders and became the first taste of Circus, Britney’s sixth studio album.

Then the “Womanizer” Chart Numbers Went Completely Crazy
And then came the numbers. “Womanizer” entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 96 before vaulting straight to No. 1 the following week. At the time, that 95-position leap set the record for the biggest jump to No. 1 in Hot 100 history.
It was also a particularly sweet bit of Britney chart history: “Womanizer” became her first Hot 100 No. 1 since “…Baby One More Time” nearly a decade earlier. Kelly Clarkson would break the leap-to-No. 1 record a few months later with “My Life Would Suck Without You,” but that does not make Britney’s 2008 move any less bonkers.
More than anything, the single immediately changed the temperature around the Circus rollout. Britney had never exactly disappeared from pop culture, but “Womanizer” gave the era a clean musical reset: fast, bratty, repetitive in exactly the right way and built around a title hook that practically dared radio not to play it.
The Video Gave Britney Another Full-On Pop Character Showcase
The accompanying “Womanizer” video reunited Britney with director Joseph Kahn, who had already worked with her on “Stronger” and “Toxic.” The concept once again let Britney move through multiple characters and disguises while turning the song’s cheating-man premise into a glossy mini revenge fantasy.
The video went on to win Best Pop Video at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, while the song itself earned a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording. That is the thing about “Womanizer”: what initially felt like a comeback single very quickly became another permanent entry in Britney’s pop canon.
Eighteen years later, the opening synth still sounds like an alarm going off — and then comes that chant. Womanizer, woman-womanizer. No warm-up. No polite reintroduction. Just Britney.
