Rachel Dratch’s Pumpkin Spice Finally Gets Her VMA Moment
Comedy Queen Rachel Dratch brought her silly fictional ’90s pop-star persona, Pumpkin Spice, to the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on September 27 — and yes, Dunkin’ really committed to the bit.
Before we even get to the sketch, though: Rachel Dratch was best dressed by far. Wow. The whole VMA night was packed with heavily styled celebrity arrivals, and somehow Dratch still walked in looking like she understood the assignment better than half the room without needing to scream for attention.
Pumpkin Spice is billed as the long-lost sixth member of the Spice Girls, a woman whose supposed pop career was apparently derailed by one all-consuming passion: lattes. The character first resurfaced earlier this month in Dunkin’s fall campaign with Emma “Baby Spice” Bunton and Geri “Ginger Spice” Halliwell-Horner, who gamely helped rewrite pop history around their very seasonal former bandmate.

Pumpkin Spice Has a Fake ’90s Résumé — and She Knows It
The VMAs appearance unfolded in a two-part Dunkin’-sponsored sketch backstage at the show. The running joke is beautifully stupid: everybody keeps recognizing Pumpkin Spice as Rachel Dratch, while Pumpkin Spice is increasingly offended that nobody seems to remember her supposedly iconic pop career.
So naturally she starts reminding people of her fictional résumé — magazine covers, dance crazes, Y2K hysteria and all the imaginary evidence required to prove that Pumpkin Spice was absolutely there, thank you very much. Beneath the diva indignation, though, she has one very simple goal: get that Dunkin’ Pumpkin Spice Latte.
Then Rachel Dratch Shows Up to Meet… Rachel Dratch
The sketch saves its most ridiculous turn for the payoff. Once Pumpkin Spice finally gets her drink, actual Rachel Dratch arrives — meaning Dratch is suddenly sharing the bit with her own fictional pop-star alter ego.
Dunkin’ says the encounter escalates into flying vases, a sad trombone and the birth of a new rallying cry: “Gourd Power.” It is exactly the kind of joke that should be exhausting on paper and somehow works because Dratch commits to Pumpkin Spice like she has been carrying a grudge against the other five Spice Girls since 1998.
The Sixth Spice Girl Joke Started Before the VMAs
The VMA sketch is actually chapter two of Dunkin’s Pumpkin Spice revival. Earlier in September, Baby Spice and Ginger Spice reunited for the campaign and introduced Dratch’s character as the forgotten sixth member — complete with stories about her pumpkin-inspired hits, questionable choreography and eventual decision to leave pop superstardom behind for her true calling.
Dratch herself joked that Pumpkin Spice was simply “ahead of her time,” which may be the most generous possible reading of a fake pop star built entirely around one seasonal coffee flavor. Still, the campaign knows exactly what it is doing: nostalgia, Spice Girls mythology and Rachel Dratch behaving like an indignant diva who cannot understand why history erased her.
And putting that character inside the VMAs — where Rachel Dratch was also an announced presenter — gives the whole thing one more layer of nonsense. Pumpkin Spice wanted her awards-show comeback. Technically, she got it.
