Sandra Bullock Was Clicking Into the Future Back in 1995

Throwback to 1995, when Sandra Bullock sat down in front of a very bulky computer and tried something that now takes about ten seconds on a phone: buying movie tickets online.
The moment came while Bullock was promoting The Net, the cyber-thriller that had her playing computer analyst Angela Bennett. MovieFone had just launched its new online MovieLink service, and contemporary coverage described Bullock’s purchase as what the service’s promoters called the first movie ticket sold in cyberspace.

The Internet Froze — and Sandra Immediately Had Notes
Watching the footage now is half tech history, half comedy. The page freezes. Bullock has to ask where the delete key is. Everyone around her is carefully talking her through an online checkout process that would be almost invisible to us today.
Then comes the part that feels especially ahead of its time: while entering the payment information, Sandra questions why the system doesn’t confirm the number a second time. In other words, she was already asking for a form of double verification while online commerce was still learning how to walk.
That doesn’t mean Sandra Bullock literally invented modern two-factor authentication — let’s not rewrite computer-science history — but the instinct is pretty fantastic. Before most people were comfortable putting a credit-card number into a website at all, she was already looking at the checkout flow and asking, “Shouldn’t you verify this again?”

Buying a Movie Ticket Online Was Actual News in 1995
That is the part that is hardest to remember now. MovieLink was being introduced as a new online extension of MovieFone, giving users theater listings, schedules, movie information, trailers and — the futuristic part — the ability to actually purchase tickets through the web.
The Washington Post covered the launch in July 1995 and reported that MovieFone had tapped Bullock to debut the service because she was starring in The Net. The movie itself opened just as the World Wide Web was starting to move from tech novelty into everyday American conversation, which made the promotional stunt almost too perfect.
Thirty-one years later, the whole thing looks wonderfully ancient: the huge monitor, the slow page load, the crowd gathered around a single computer, and Sandra treating a completed web transaction like she had just successfully landed a plane.
Ahead of her time? We’ll give her that one.
