Back To The Future: Meet Abu Bilal, a Syrian fella who just knocked his way back into a piece of life he had left sealed behind a wall for roughly 15 years.
Before leaving Syria in 2011 for Kuwait, Abu Bilal built a false wall inside his home and hid his private library behind it. He feared that some of the religious, political and intellectual books on those shelves could put him or his family at risk under the former Assad regime.
He didn’t know whether he would ever get to see any of it again.

The collection reportedly included hundreds of books and magazines, along with Quranic study certificates, personal documents and other belongings. Some coverage also notes religious and academic works that had been restricted or viewed with suspicion under Bashar al-Assad’s government.
So Abu Bilal did something as simple as it was radical: he made the books disappear without destroying them. He sealed the shelves behind a concrete barrier, left the country and hoped that one day the wall could come back down.
Fifteen years later, it finally did.
Video shared by his son shows Abu Bilal returning with a hammer and slowly breaking through the barrier. Dust falls. Blocks loosen. Then the shelves appear exactly where they had been waiting all those years.
And somehow, after war, displacement and more than a decade sealed in darkness, the library was still largely intact. Books remained upright. Documents survived. Reports described only a small amount of dust making its way into the hidden space.
That is the part that makes the footage hit. It is not merely a man finding some old books. It is somebody physically reopening a room he had closed because the world around him had become too dangerous to trust.
Abu Bilal had spent about 15 years in Kuwait. By the time he could return, Syria had changed dramatically. Bashar al-Assad’s government fell in December 2024, ending more than five decades of Assad-family rule and reshaping what could be displayed, published and openly discussed in the country.
The timing gives the little secret library an even bigger charge. Books that once had to sit behind concrete are now being brought back into the light while Syria’s literary world is itself reopening. Previously restricted religious and political titles have reappeared in bookshops and at literary events, including the 2026 Damascus International Book Fair.
Still, this story is best kept on the human scale. One fella. One wall. One library he refused to abandon.
He hid the collection because he didn’t know what was coming. Fifteen years later, he got to pick up a hammer and find out that what mattered to him had waited.
