A Spoonful Of Whimsy: In Hawaiian Nature History, A Bird, Named “The Kauaʻi ʻōʻō” Once Thrived

Once upon a time in nature history, The Kauaʻi ʻōʻō (Moho braccatus) was a species of bird found only on the Hawaiian island of Kauaʻi. Once found in thee island’s forests. It’s population collapsed due to habitat loss, introduced predators and mosquito-borne diseases.

By the early 1980s, only a single known pair remained. After the female disappeared, the last known male continued singing through the forest.

The species was last detected in 1987. Despite decades of extensive searches, it was never found again.
